For years, rumors of a foldable iPhone have felt like a moving target. Massive supply chain breakthroughs and recent code discoveries in the iOS 27 developer beta confirm Apple is finally ready to enter the folding smartphone market.

While early rumors dubbed this device the “iPhone 17 Fold,” current supply chain leaks and top analysts indicate that Apple’s first-ever foldable will launch under a new premium moniker: the iPhone Ultra (or iPhone Fold).

If you are wondering whether to upgrade or wait, here is a down-to-earth breakdown of the rumored release date, specs, and eye-watering price tag of Apple’s most ambitious device yet.

Release Date: When is the iPhone Fold Arriving?

When will the foldable iPhone be released?

Apple is on track to unveil its first foldable iPhone (expected to be named the iPhone Ultra) in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series.

How much will the iPhone Fold cost?

Leaks point to a starting price of approximately $2,325 for the base 256GB model, scaling up to near $rising tothe 1TB variant.

Does the iPhone Fold have Face ID?

No. Due to the ultra-thin 4.5mm profile of the unfolded screen, Apple is replacing Face ID with a side-mounted Touch ID sensor on the power button.

Current shipments of components from Apple’s Asian suppliers indicate the foldable iPhone remains on track for a September 2026 reveal.

Apple is reportedly deploying a unique split-launch strategy for its lineup. The foldable “iPhone Ultra” is slated to debut alongside the flagship iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this fall, while the baseline standard iPhone models are held back for a spring release.

Note on Availability: While the official announcement is expected in September, mass production shifts suggest retail shipping could face tight caps or a slight delay into October or December 2026. Expect pre-order shipping windows to slip fast.

Design and Display: The Death of the Crease

Unlike the narrow form factor of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, Apple is opting for a shorter, wider “passport-style” layout, similar to the Google Pixel Fold or Huawei Pura X.

  • The Outer Display: A comfortable 5.5-inch cover screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio, allowing for easy one-handed use when closed.
  • The Inner Display: Unfolds horizontally into a massive 7.8-inch near-square canvas, transforming the device into a pocket-sized iPad.

    (Folded: 9.5mm) (Unfolded: 4.5mm)

Apple’s primary engineering focus has been on eliminating the notorious display crease. To achieve a completely crease-free panel, Apple is working exclusively with Samsung Display on a proprietary “glass sandwich” design. This layout uses a dual-layer Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) setup paired with a soft, cushioning Optically Clear Adhesive (OCA) to distribute structural stress evenly when bent.

When unfolded, the phone is a mere 4.5mm thick, making it the thinnest iOS device ever engineered.

Under the Hood: Specs and Performance

Apple isn’t holding back on performance for its first-generation foldable. The next-generation A20 Pro chip will power the device, manufactured using TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process.

Key Technical Specifications:

  • Processor: A20 Pro (2nm architecture)
  • RAM: 12GB of RAM stacked directly onto the chip wafer using advanced packaging, specifically optimized to handle heavy Apple Intelligence (AI) multitasking across dual screens.
  • Security: Touch ID integrated into the side power button. The chassis is so thin (4.5mm when open) that there is no physical clearance to house the standard TrueDepth camera hardware required for Face ID.
  • Camera Setup: A dual-camera array on the rear (featuring a 48MP main sensor) resting on a streamlined camera plateau, alongside dual inner and outer selfie cameras.
  • Battery: A split-cell battery design with an estimated capacity of roughly 5,088 mAh to keep the massive internal screen powered all day.

Price: The Most Expensive iPhone Ever

Innovation on this level comes with severe sticker shock. The iPhone Ultra is positioned as an ultra-premium luxury tier above the Pro Max line.

Early pricing structures leaked from the supply chain suggest the following retail tiers:

  • 256GB: ~$2,325
  • 512GB: ~$2,610
  • 1TB: ~$2,900

The Verdict: Should You Wait For It?

The upcoming foldable iPhone is a technical marvel meant for early adopters, tech enthusiasts, and power users who want a phone and an iPad mini rolled into a single, pocketable device. If you want a crease-free, incredibly thin folding phone backed by the power of iOS 27, saving up for the September reveal is a no-brainer. However, if the $2,000+ price tag or the lack of Face ID gives you pause, the mainline iPhone 18 Pro will likely offer a safer, more traditional upgrade path.
